CIWEM – your
environment, our concern
The Chartered Institution of Water
and Environmental Management (CIWEM) is a multidisciplinary professional
and examining body for engineers, scientists and other professionally qualified
personnel engaged in water and environmental management.
History
CIWEM has a history of working in
environmental management dating back to 1895. In the succeeding decades,
engineers, scientists and other professionals came together to combine
their expertise across a broad range of environmental disciplines.
The present day Institution was formed
in 1987 when the Institution of Public Health Engineers merged with the
Institution of Water Engineers and Scientists and the Institute of Water
Pollution Control to form the Institution of Water and Environmental Management.
The Institution was granted a royal
charter in 1995 and was proud to celebrate its centenary in the same year.
CIWEM's vision
The Institution's vision is to be
a world-leading, professional institution and a focal point for an integrated
approach to engineering, science and other disciplines involved in all
aspects of environmental management and sustainable development.
CIWEM's mission
CIWEM's mission is to achieve substantial
progress towards securing our Vision. It shows in broad terms how we intend
to secure each facet of our Vision:
-
We will support
government, industry and the community with the review and development
of environmental policy and sustainable development initiatives.
-
We
will develop and maintain educational, professional and continuing development
standards consistent with the high qualities needed to achieve customer
service and sustainable goals.
-
We will provide
the opportunity for our members and their employers to demonstrate the
quality of their endeavours.
-
Through our publications
and meetings we will disseminate technical and managerial information essential
to effective environmental management practice.
-
We will provide
quality service to support our members, their employers and the communities
they serve.
-
We will consult
widely and act sensitively, encouraging others to join with us and so strengthen
and sharpen the focus on the sustainable management of our environment.
