The Institution of Engineers is a richly diverse organisation, made stronger by the many parts that make up the whole. We have many communities of interest that interact and carry out the business of the institution: our state and territory Divisions, volunteer groups, colleges and societies. Some of the linked pages below are entirely owned by the person or group contributing the content. Accordingly, this page is a gateway to the diversity of the Institution and the accuracy of the information is not, therefore, necessarily endorsed by the Institution.

The six discipline-based Colleges are the prime providers of continuing professional development. They collectively cover and represent all disciplines relevant to engineers for those areas of practice in which members will normally have established their competencies.

The National Committees are affiliated with the Colleges and provide a national focus on specific aspects of engineering, ranging in nature from those representing a special learned field of engineering to those related to an industry.

Technical Societies offer members the opportunity to maintain contact with others practicing in the same discipline of engineering or who share interests in specific aspects of engineering-related subjects. The Technical Societies provide the basis for developing national centres of expertise in their fields.

Women in Engineering groups provide an opportunity for members to meet and exchange information and ideas, as well as promoting an inclusive culture that values a wide range of skills and knowledge.

The Institution recognises that young engineers are not only the future of the IEAust but also of the country. Young Engineers Australia is a special interest group focusing on the needs of members under the age of 30 years.

The Society of Engineering Officers caters to the needs and interests of members in the Engineering Officer grades (previously known as Engineering Associates) and provides activities specifically for that sector of membership.

National finalists in the Institution’s annual awards program, the National Engineering Excellence Awards, also become members of the prestigious Australian Engineering Achievers Group (AEAG). AEAG members adhere to best practice and are leaders in their fields of engineering endeavour. They demonstrate world class expertise and innovation in developing and implementing engineering solutions. The Institution promotes the AEAG and its members as the benchmarks of Australian engineering.
