Environmental Biotechnology Cooperative
Research Centre (EBCRC)

section heading graphic   Overview

The Environmental Biotechnology Cooperative Research Centre (EBCRC) aims to create a viable new environmental sector in the biotechnology industry. Industry has just begun to apply environmental biotechnology to by-product processing and to the generation of valuable products from process wastes. EBCRC is partially funded under the Australian Government’s Cooperative Research Centres program, matched by industry participants, universities and income from licence fees, contract research and other similar activities.

section heading graphic   Competitive Advantages

The application of advanced biotechnical and analytical tools, as well as proteomics and molecular genetics, to enhance naturally occurring systems has the potential to fundamentally change the way in which process by-products are managed. To achieve this, EBCRC has a team of 17 world-class researchers in four key areas of environmental biotechnology and a significant level of research activity in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. The EBCRC also has a training program which provides the human resources needed to drive this new, commercially viable environmental biotechnology sector. By providing competitive postgraduate and final year undergraduate scholarship, we are training the future research leaders.

The EBCRC aims to capitalise for Australia the outcomes of fundamental biotechnology research and development to develop technology and industries which:

  • transform waste to valuable products
  • rapidly detect bacteria and other microorganisms
  • control and manage biological processes
  • restore the environment
  • create new natural products
  • harness fast low energy bioprocesses
  • promote sustainability.
